This is in response to government’s policy to make Internet accessible and affordable to the people of the Gambia and to make Gambia the IT hub of West Africa (see vision2020). The project will enable users who do not have access to telephone lines to get connected to the internet. The Wireless Wide Area Backbone will also give corporate customers with more than one branch like banks, Governments Offices a second option as oppose to the traditional lease lines to implement their own Wireless Virtual Private Networks. QuantumNET has decided to look for financing to deploy a more reliable, scalable and affordable wireless technology. We started by securing our own range of spectrum by licensing both the 3.5 and 5.8 ghz frequencies. Instead of using the current 2 towers with 2 base stations, we have decided to provide 16 Towers with sixteen base stations, each covering a radius of 5km to cover all the major towns. This will give our customer faster and more reliable services. We would also cover almost half of the country with this setup. QuantumNET is also currently looking at other wireless technology in a bid to provide the most reliable and stable wireless network in the Gambia. The company is currently looking at wireless technology that can provide a higher bandwidth of atleast 54MBPS and also have the capability for providing internal voice communications. 25
